How Decimal to Octal Conversion Works

Octal is a base-8 number system that uses digits 0-7. To convert a decimal number (base-10) to octal:

  1. Divide the decimal number by 8
  2. Record the remainder (this will be the least significant digit)
  3. Use the quotient from the previous step and divide by 8 again
  4. Record the new remainder
  5. Repeat until the quotient is 0
  6. The octal equivalent is the sequence of remainders read from last to first

Example conversion for decimal 255:

DivisionQuotientRemainder
255 ÷ 8317
31 ÷ 837
3 ÷ 803

Reading the remainders from bottom to top gives us the octal equivalent: 377
