About Energy Units
Joules & Kilojoules
The joule (J) is the SI unit of energy. One joule is defined as the amount of work done when a force of one newton displaces a mass through a distance of one meter.
Kilojoules (kJ) are commonly used in nutritional information alongside calories.
Calories
A calorie (cal) is the amount of heat energy needed to raise the temperature of one gram of water by one degree Celsius.
Kilocalories (kcal) are what we typically refer to as "Calories" on food packaging (1 Calorie = 1 kcal = 1000 cal).
Other Energy Units
BTU (British Thermal Unit): Amount of energy needed to heat one pound of water by 1°F.
Kilowatt-hour (kWh): Common unit for electricity billing (1 kWh = 3.6 million joules).
Electronvolt (eV): Energy gained by an electron moving across an electric potential difference of one volt.
